S.T.E.M. Learning incorporates science, technology, engineering, and math. S.T.E.M. concepts can be incorporated into almost any topic and lesson! Often, teachers will introduce S.T.E.M. lessons with highly-interactive and hands-on activities. By engaging the students through play, the concepts are not only learned but retained! Schools all over the nation have integrated S.T.E.M.concepts to their curriculums.

S.T.E.A.M. Learning adds “art” to widely-accepted the list of S.T.E.M. activities. Art projects add fun, S.T.E.M.-focused ways to teach art and design. The addition of color, texture, movement, and creation adds even more depth to the lessons. By engaging the child’s creativity, the neurological pathways become even more receptive! This additional layer of engagement is gaining momentum in education communities…with good reason!

The concept of S.T.E.A.M. Learning is not new. When S.T.E.M. first gained traction in the world of education, arts teachers were concerned that art, music, and dance would be under-valued, giving children a less well-rounded education.

However, when you think about it, it is incredibly hard to separate science, technology, engineering, and math from the arts.

In mathematics, artists find inspiration. The golden ratio is “an expression of the ratio of two sums whereby their ratio is equal to the larger of the two quantities.” This ratio is repeatedly seen in the greatest works of art, whether painted by Botticelli or your preschooler.
